Miscellaneous topics!

The floods in the UK this July have brought misery to many people and it is still on-going... but I wonder what it has done to the wildlife of our countryside? It has also affected farm livestock, the land itself, and crops.

The misery will continue for many months before things get back to a semblance of normality... and, sadly, some people have lost their beloved pets, people have died too.

I am glad Edwina Curry has actually managed to get the reality of building over too much of our countryside highlighted on television... it is about time a little reality was brought into the mad dash to over-populate and thus cover the land with houses and more and more concrete for roads, warehouses, and what is then deemed 'essential' infastructure.

To a lighter topic... school holidays... wouldn't it be great if some agility clubs had an open day for interested youngsters. Everything which can be done to encourage responsible pet ownership by adding to knowledge would be a step forward.

More on puppy mills / puppy farms

Two to four million puppy mills puppies are sold each year... whilst millions of animals at shelters are euthanized for lack of good homes.

Please read the horrific statement above again! [And again, if you will.]

Millions euthanized because their owners got fed up with them, and they couldn't be found a new home... it is horrific.

Visit The Humane Society, stop puppy mills page... where you can get a brilliant, and information packed free 4-page PDF for prospective dog owners - a "buyer's guide". You can also obtain campaign gear, or banners for your website, and read puppy buying tips.

Newsletters from the Defenders Organisation

The following is a quote from the current Defenders newsletter. Please visit their website, sign up for the newsletter, visit the adoption page, read the information on all the animal issues... then spread the word!

"Late last week, even as many families enjoyed the final hours of July 4th vacations in Yellowstone National Park, officials in the Bush/Cheney Administration announced a new proposal that could lead to widespread regional killing of gray wolves, some of the park’s most popular residents."

Guide Dogs for the Blind... Bolton, UK

The quoted item below is part of a request for help I received...

"Pemberton taxi's in Wigan are having a grand auction night in aid of guide dogs for the blind.

They are hoping to raise five thousand pounds to sponser a guide dog.

The event is being held at the Douglas Bank Pub, Wigan on August 24th.

The event has been registered with the local Guide Dog branch located in Bolton. You can verify this on Bolton 01204 546510 ... if you could offer any help we would be grateful."

Weather!

This last weekend... at least in the parts of the UK we have visited, or seen TV coverage of... has been FINE. And that's news!

I hope all Agility shows and training benefitted from the respite. The Rhodesian Ridgeback Welfare Trust barbeque and fun day at Chieveley on Sunday enjoyed fine weather throughout... and some of the dogs attempted the few agility obstacles which were set out in the field.

Of course, being ridgebacks, they only perform when food is used as a motivator! And they never mind that in the recall it is usually one of the 'honorary ridgebacks' [terriers, and other small dogs] who wins hands down... as the ridgebacks just lope along!

Rain stops play! And not just for underwater cricket pitches...

Our next doggy day out is to the Rhodesian Ridgeback Welfare Trust summer barbeque day... which is to be held on Sunday - dare I say the weather forecast is NOT for rain! Proceeds are to help finance the re-homing of Ridgebacks who are in need of rescue... a fun day for both owners and dogs alike. An agility type course is set up for the dogs to try out and compete at, and there are other races and games for our dogs. The main 'game' for owners is 'stop that dog pinching the barbeque'!

With all the appalling weather we are having in the UK, many outdoor events have had to be cancelled due to safety aspects. In all it's history The Royal [Agricultural] Show, which is held just outside Kenilworth in Warwickshire, has never had to be cancelled before... but this time the final day had to be cancelled and tractors were put to good use before that pulling cars out of the car parks.

The TV pictures from the car parks were horrific, even though we have a 4 x 4 we would not have attempted it because of the bottlenecks in the car parks and other vehicles being stuck in front of you! The parking is in a low area, with a river flowing through, which doesn't help matters. Just mud, mud, and more mud!

Let's hope that the weather improves, and the clear up and drying out of great swathes of our country is effected with much greater speed than is normal!
